#TheTalks – Christin Chang of CHRISU Scarves

I’m a big scarf person and I’m very glad that a few months ago I came across Christin Chang‘s scarves with gorgeous and unique illustration style on instagram. We had a little LUSH Talk with the designer on her brand CHRISU here:

What is your education/work background?

I majored in Fine Arts specializing in painting, drawing and prints from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

How did you discover your love for illustrations and drawing?

I honestly don’t remember the first time I drew a picture because art was a big part of my life.  I went through different phases of appreciating art from just being a hobby to pursuing art as a major.  I feel that I am going through a new phase now that I am venturing into business aspect of art, as a scarf designer.  It’s definitely a new and exciting experience!

Why do you decide on printing your illustrations on silk scarves instead of other products, such as stationary or other apparel items?

I chose to print on scarves because they are so versatile. When they are laid flatly on a surface or hung on a wall, it functions as an artwork but when it’s wrapped or sculpted into a three-dimensional form, it functions as a fashion accessory.  I love that! Sometimes, I would buy a scarf and frame it for my home and next week, I’ll take it out to wear it.  I want people to do that with my scarves.  I decided to choose a material that would allow me to pursue both art and fashion.

You have some interesting themes on various designs. Where do you get your inspirations from?

“Start copying what you love. Copying, copying, copying.  And at the end of the copy you will find yourself.” –Yohji Yamamoto

I refer to this quote in between projects when I need some inspiration.  I look through my favorite artist and their work and copy them in my sketchbook.  I think this is the best way to learn new techniques and it also helps you understand the artist better. The only place I don’t go to is the internet! I try to stay away from it when I am brainstorming because there’s too much stuff out there that it overwhelms my mind and limits my creativity.

hi! from CHRISU scarf

Where are you based? If you are to move to another country/city, where would it be and why?

I am based on Connecticut and New York but if I can move to a whole new place, I would love to live in London because Harry Potter lives there.

Veronica (www.vnikali.com), Michael (www.2individuals.com), and me here. Thank you Christin for the floaty silk scarf! It has become my every day essential – no matter for my bag or my neck!

Is there a person/sentence/spot that always refreshes your mind?

“An expert is a person who has made all the mistakes that can be.”  –Niels Bohr

Mistakes are good. You learn and move on.

I brought it with me to my Tokyo business trip as well! Blog post of the trip is here

Are you planning any exciting projects at the moment?

Developing and growing CHRISU as a brand is an exciting project in itself, but my next goal is to get into a gallery with my scarves as an artwork.
